Each year in October, television and entertainment industry professionals converge at MIPCOM for four days of transformative meetings, screenings and information sessions that will later turn into groundbreaking deals. 15 October marked the opening of #MIPCOM2018 and we are watching from afar and here’s why.
1.So what is MIPCOM?
Marché International des Programmes de Communication or MIPCOM is an annual trade show aimed at bringing together television and entertainment industry influencers and representatives like filmmakers, broadcasters, producers and others to buy and sell programmes, formats and concepts. MIPCOM is also host to a number of celebrities during the four-day conference where the industry enjoys screenings, meetings, networking and presentations with prospective partners.
2.2018’s conference theme is unrivalled.
The #MIPCOM2018 theme is The Big Shift: Transitioning To A Reshaped Media Landscape. With the demand for premium quality content on such a high, the urgency for a new way to produce content in an ever-changing digital space rises too. The continual growth of streaming services places pressure on traditional television production and the need to develop content with an edge is essential.
‘Now is the time to envision future business models, put new rules in play and take part in an unprecedented reshaping of the entertainment media landscape. Now is the time to gear up for the Big Shift.’
3.The Personality of the Year is a #GirlBoss
Issa Rae has been named MIPCOM 2018 Personality of the Year and one of the much anticipated keynote interviewees. As the writer, director, producer and star of HBO’s hit tv series, Insecure, Rae has set the bar high for young women in the industry. Her hilarious sense of humour and originality has earned her an Emmy® nomination, 2 Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress as well as a Peabody Award in April 2018.
Issa Rae will be honoured at a gala dinner for leading international television executives at the Carlton Hotel, Cannes.
