This April, Okuhle Media joined the international television community for the 2018 MIPTV Conference in Cannes, France. And, as one of Africa’s most prominent media and production companies, we had the distinct pleasure of being part of the event’s “Creative Africa” Pavilion.
Every year the conference brings together producers, creators, buyers, distributors, and decision-makers of television and digital content from around the world for a week of networking, learning, and deal-making. And we were there to take advantage of all the possibilities.
“We’ve been attending the MIP Conferences for over 10 years and it’s still such a big opportunity for us. It gave us a chance to pitch the new shows that we have in development to international distribution companies and broadcasters. It also helped us build on existing relationships and to network,” says Louise McClelland, Managing Director of Okuhle International.
Television, globally, is undergoing a revolution, in large part powered by the advent of digital platforms and media. Attending the event over the years has helped Okuhle Media keep its finger on the pulse of developments to ensure it produces quality and relevant content.
“Attending MIPTV is important for us. One can easily be isolated from trends happening in other places”, explains Grant Flynn, Head of Creative Development at Okuhle International.
“It invigorated our soul and we came back feeling inspired and with so many ideas”, he adds.
Bringing Africa to the World
Apart from attending the conference to show the world what Okuhle Media can do, we were also there to show them what Africa can do. The MIPTV “Creative Africa” Pavilion was aimed at driving interest in African television and facilitating global distribution opportunities for African content. Along with various content producers from across the continent, we occupied a dedicated space at the conference and were able to introduce attendees from all over the world to African excellence for the small screen.
Meeting and Greeting
Being part of the world’s largest television conference also brought with it the opportunity to meet with some of the biggest names in the industry. Over the years, Okuhle Media has established credible relationships with several industry leaders and this year we planned to impress them with our collection of great programming.
“We’ve had some amazing projects in development for the past year and had meetings lined up to present our ideas or enter second-stage negotiations,” says Louise. “We met with highly respected global players such as Sony, Freemantle, Warner Bros, Discovery, ITV, Blue Ant, Banijay, DCD, Red Arrow, Trace, just to name a few.”
The team are now back from MIPTV Conference which ran from 9 to 12 April 2018 and was attended by around 10 500-entertainment industry leaders from around the world.
They say it was the wettest of all MIP Festivals but it resulted in much intent and focus on the business
